Day 288: woodland floor

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The woodland floor in October has something of the lucky dip, or raffle about it, booted feet shuffling through an al fresco tombola drum, stick your hand in (wear gloves, there are nettles and spiky seed cases) and pull out a prize. Here, beneath an arching, sun-pierced canopy of chestnut and hazel, the crop is so prolific even greedy grey squirrels can afford to be profligate, ignoring or abandoning fat, red brown nuts and scampering off to spiral up a thick grey tree trunk at your approach. And – O! – that crumbly, brown, ankle-swallowing layer of leaf mould. The envy of every gardener.
