Day 234: tatting fern

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The tatting fern is back. There are many splendid things about this particular plant, not least it’s botanical name Athyrium filix-femina ‘Frizelliae’, every word of which is a joy to intone, or the scallopped edges to its pinnae, from which its common name – based upon a particularly intricate kind of hand-made lace – is derived. I’m feeling particularly chuffed with myself for having nursed it back to health, and choosing to overlook the fact that I’d let it get to the state where it’s taken until the end of August to come back properly from its winter slumbers. So while it’s not a choice if you’re looking for evergreen cover, it’s also good to remember that it is really not keen on drying out completely. Another creature of the woodland edge, water appropriately.
