Day 59: Verbena bonariensis

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Verbena bonariensis is one of that category of plants that usefully give you height, without completely obscuring your view – great for drawing a diaphanous veil over sections of the garden. But you’d be mad to buy a plant – just find a friend who has some and take home handfuls of seed or, just as likely, potfuls of seedlings, both of which there is always a great bounty. Not the most attractive plant over winter when the evergreen stems seem somehow at odds with the untidy seedheads, but left for the birds until now when they get cut down within a few inches of the ground.
