Day 63: purple-leaved plum

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The blossom is on its way. Already in town where it’s warmer, magnolias are out – some miles further out, it’s the cherries that are coming into flower. Not yet that glorious fortnight of riotous colour, but the first tentative blooms. Everyone should all plant a cherry tree, for the joy of its flowers in spring, and its shade in the summer. I’d pick a purple-leaved plum, Prunus cerasifera 'Pissardii’ – palest of pink flowers fading to white – to gaze at its branches, each flowering twig the concentrated essence of the zen garden.
