Day 4: Winter warmers

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Snow is falling, everywhere but here. At least, that’s how it seems, the best we can muster in this part of the world apparently being a fleeting filigree edge to the leaves of Salvia uliginosa (the bog sage). The frost lingers for a few hours into the morning, to be replaced by a chill dampness that creeps under the many layers muffling the gardener. On these brisk winter gardening sessions, I’ve enjoyed being no more than a few dozen paces from the warmth of the house, the kettle and, until very recently, a tin of home-baked mince pies (I finished the last jar of mincemeat a couple of days ago and, although replacements are still stacked high in the supermarket, I feel I ought to stop before I develop my own personal pastry crust). The remedy for not gardening in such close proximity to the coziness beyond your own back door is to schedule the most energetic and warming job for the coldest days of the year. Cue the barrowing and shovelling of manures and mulches in the days and weeks to come.
