Day 36: George Henry Kern

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

'George Henry Kern' is undoubtedly an excellent character whose pink flowers in spring possess the best of both stellata and lily-flowered magnolia varieties. That he doesn’t get too big was, if I recall, his chief virtue when choosing a small tree or shrub for this particular spot, though in my opinion you can’t really go too large with a magnolia, unless it’s beyond the realms of physics to fit the canopy into the available space. And even then I might be tempted to prune, or to move a building slightly to the left. Here, snowdrops are nodding gently in conference around George Henry’s roots and, some weeks to go till the flowers appear, the furry grey buds somehow murmur of warmth and comfort while the rain, having recently increased in resolve from a persistent drizzle to something that feels like it has a point to prove, tries its darnedest to find a way down the back of my collar. And all the while those tactile bud scales keep their precious charges tucked snuggly up.
