Day 77: seedy shrub

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

It’s no great secret that I love a self-seeder.

Actually, let’s stop right there a moment. I’m continually having to haul myself up for using horticultural jargon that leaves those who are only just discovering within themselves an interest in plants and gardens in a state of confusion. And so – it’s no great secret that I love a plant that is particularly enthusiast at reproducing copies of itself from seed. Though we might consider the habit annoying in a scrappy ruderal weed like hairy bittercress, we’re rather more inclined to welcome multiple instances of an attractive herbaceous perennial – free plants, after all. And though both our ash tree and the neighbour’s birch are prone to seed themselves about with enthusiasm, the shrubs in my garden tend to keep themselves to themselves, which makes today’s discovery of a seedling Christmas box (Sarcococca confusa) all the more welcome.
