Day 81: Ranunculus ficaria

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Little yellow-eye, winking up at me from your rosette of mottled green leaves – where have you been? Lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria, or Ficaria verna subsp. verna, depending on which dead Latin guy you ask) is usually out in flower a few weeks earlier than this, but has clearly decided that it was worth waiting to see the back of winter 20/21 before putting on a show. Can’t say I blame it. This year, I am pleased to see an old friend, whose blanketing tendencies and brittle root tubers can sometimes be a nuisance, but whose visit is always so brief it’s hardly worth getting in a pickle about.

Apologies for the absence from your in-boxes of yesterday morning’s post. It was written and published, but I’d given it an incorrect timestamp, so the mailing software didn’t feel the need to send it out to you!
