Day 95: purple periwinkle

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I think I was virulently opposed to vinca at an earlier point in my gardening life – something to do with having to liberate a dry slope from the clutches of an unappreciated greater periwinkle. The experience clearly left me both slightly horticulturally scarred, whilst also confirming in a particularly visceral manner quite how perfect the plant was in that kind of awkward situation. Thankfully, I eventually came to my senses and began to appreciate the flowers, the foliage, the scrabbling, looping, layering stems though, if pressed, I’d confess to a preference for Vinca minor over the larger major. It persists in a variegated guise in a shady spot of my own garden – a relic of the previous incumbents – and today I introduced my absolute favourite, Vinca minor ‘Atropurpurea’; evergreen ground cover with deep, purple blooms. Come on, former gardening self – what’s not to like?
