Day 127: the bashful bluebell

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The Spanish bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica) have arrived at last – though it might be that I’m the only person in the country who’s been waiting for them to appear. Reviled as decidedly inferior to our more delicate and deeply-coloured variety, I’m still pleased to see their pale, ghostly glow and pyjama-striped bells, even if such airiness seems somehow at odds with the thick, strappy foliage and a definite inclination towards claiming ground (they need a firm hand when threatening to go to seed, and it never hurts to direct the odd clump or three towards the garden wastebin or bonfire). This year they seem bashful, hiding almost inside the sarcococca and definitely, as with so much else just now, almost a fortnight late.
