Day 138: garden pest

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I’ve identified the new critter in the garden. The creature that’s been biting the flowers off the tulips in the courtyard and shredding the leaves of anything up to eighteen inches off the ground. It’s small, black and velvet-smooth, fast and lithe as a whip, and it’s arrived here not to replace the previous and much-missed furry plant muncher, but to take on some of his former occupations while re-introducing a degree of creative canine chaos. It answers (on occasion) to the name of Nell, and has designs upon your paeonies and your heart.
