Day 204: turks cap lily

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

A couple of years I got confused by the lilies at Great Dixter – thrown back into childhood reveries of the turks cap lilies I grew up with by the kitchen door. There’s more than one kind of spotted orange lily, which probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone, but while the martagon or tiger lilies (Lilium lancifolium var. fortunei) deep in the borders are undeniably wonderful, the lily of my youth (Lilium superbum) with its more fiery tones is, appropriately, sited much closer to the house.
