Day 251: Rose ‘Gentle Hermione’

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

A hot day – proper, sunny summer stuff – and the garden is starting to flag a little. The little Persicaria ‘Purple Fantasy’ pokes out from beneath the skirts of the oak-leaved hydrangea, begging for a drink (it’s tough, but it doesn’t like to dry out) – I know how it feels. The roses might not be looking their best, but they’re still full of promise with buds ready to burst, and Gentle Hermione waylays me as I wander up the path, demanding I stick my nose deep into the shallow cup of her flower and breathe deeply that scent that, with today’s heat, inhabits the word ‘myrrh’ so often used in describing it.
