Day 259: Panicum virgatum 'Warrior'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Of the many reasons to like a plant, its ability to make you smile should surely be close to the top. And since long-time readers of this blog will by now be aware that I enjoy a giggle at a common name (especially the rude ones), it should come as no surprise that at least some of the pleasure I derive from this plant comes from its being known as ‘panic grass’, which perfectly sums up its habit of coming into flower right at the last moment of the gardening year, just as everything else is going to seed. The knowledge that the Latin word panus, meaning swelling or grain, is responsible for the name hardly spoils the fun, and if that weren’t enough to love, the colouring of Panicum virgatum ‘Warrior’ makes it look as though someone has been metallic cords with tiny garnets. Catch it with raindrops on, and I defy you not to crack a smile.
