Day 265: flat-stalked spindle

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

If it’s too early in the year for you to read about autumn colour, you might want to skip today’s post. Only I met a spindle tree I’d not before encountered at Chelsea yesterday, and they’re rather good at that flamboyant fall thing. This is the flat-stalked spindle, Euonymus planipes, as seen flanking the wonderful planting on Alexandra Noble’s Balcony of Blooms. “I often find I’m designing for myself,” says Alexandra, “and I like a garden that could end up in my drink!”  The spindles have been underplanted with a gorgeous blend of erigeron, salad burnet, alpine strawberry, thyme and oregano – all of which are edible, though the daisy might not add much in terms of flavour. With foliage already hinting at the glorious scarlet flames to come, the real show stoppers are the large seed cases, probably four times the size of Euonymus alatus or E. europaeus; bright red, splitting to reveal the characteristic orange seeds inside; dayglo colours warning that, temping as it might be, this is the one bit of the garden you’d not want to find bobbing about in your Pimms.
