Day 268: meadow-rue

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Thalictrum delayavi ‘Hewitt’s Double’

‘Airy’ is the word that springs to mind when thinking of meadow-rue (Thalictrum delayavi) in the garden – a tall froth of lilac and cream flowers, suspended on wiry stems above delicate foliage that calls to mind the fronds of a maidenhair fern. Preferring moist (but not soggy) soils, they’re at their most content in dappled shade, and it’s that kind of dancing, woodland edge light that shows them to their best advantage. One of those insubstantial border-fillers, that nonetheless adds a touch of magic to the garden.
