Day 273: acanthus again

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

There’s a kind of harlequin thing going on with the acanthus right now, a green and yellow motley signposting the way on into autumn. The foolish garb seems appropriate, and I take it as a particular taunt from a plant that takes up so much space, harbours so many molluscs, and displays such a marked reluctance to bloom (though this year it did condescend to erect a pair of flowering spikes, which is more than can usually be bothered to do). If I don’t divide it ruthlessly this autumn, it will begin to move out of the bed and into the lawn, there to produce even more voluminous mounds of handsome, snail-sheltering foliage. And so, should you have the misfortune to know me in person, prepare for a gift of truculent plant matter which, just to spite me, will probably prove to be distinctly more cooperative in your garden than it ever has in mine.
