Day 275: Virginia creeper

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Renegade vines clamber over the fence from next door, tangling with the buddleia and inveigling themselves into the lilacs. Earlier in the year it’s the clematis (the lovely but rampant double-flowered C. montana ‘Broughton Star’), but now the Virginia creeper shows its true colours. Truth be told, Parthenocisus quinquefolia has probably been there for a while, the infraction going unnoticed with so much going on elsewhere. Now, green chlorophyll having departed leaving only bright red anthocyanin pigments in the foliage, it’s hard to miss. Marauders can be welcomed into the garden when they’re this handsome.
