Day 328: chocolate cosmos

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Chocolate cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus) is still in flower in the borders, mixed in here with ornamental grasses, its deep maroon petals and crinkly seedheads injecting some crunchy, choc chip texture into the straw-coloured tableau. A perennial cosmos with a distinct whiff of chocolate (better in some specimens than others, and I find I need to stick the old schnoz right in there for a good snort), it requires protection over winter. Leave it in the ground and mulch well, or lift and keep the tubers dry and free from frost. It’s a cosmos that thinks it’s a dahlia, in other words and, since both are from Mexico, maybe that’s understandable.
