Day 353: Pelargonium tomentosum

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I’m a bit of a sucker for a furry plant. I’m also a fan of scented-leaved pelargoniums. A pelargonium with soft, furry stems and leaves and a strong peppermint scent was always going to grab my attention, and so Pelargonium tomentosum has taken its place at the heart of my collection, even if I do find it a slightly tricky character in the relatively tight space to which the pellies are confined while overwintering indoors. It lollops and lolls about like a sulky teenager, only one with rather brittle limbs, while its progeny ‘Chocolate Peppermint’ (the result of a never-to-be-mentioned one night stand with an oak-leaved pelargonium) is a little more upright, and presumably mortified by the antics of its parent.
