Day 3: galvanised steel

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Note to self: not the best way to treat your hose attachments in winter – they don’t like the frost.

Blue-grey, white fleckled, preferably with a bit of moss and algae – there’s nothing quite like the patina of galvanised steel in the garden, particularly in winter. I love scouring flea markets and eBay for old planters and watering cans, though boot sales remain the best bet for a bargain where folk are clearing out their sheds, rather than cashing in on a decorating trend. You can buy them new, but older pieces have more heft, and feel like they have stories to tell.
