There’s much to be said for plants that go to seed with style. Ligularia dentata ‘Desdamona’ – in spring and summer a handsome presence with orange-yellow daisy flowers over mounds of deep green and bronze foliage – spends winter in shades of black, chocolate brown to light beige; long, dark slender stems surmounted by pale pompon seed-heads. Preferring a moist soil it will cope with sun, but give it dappled shade and it will reward you with vigorous growth and flower.
