Topiary and water features are two of the design elements that play into the narrative we gardeners like to spin ourselves that somehow we can contain nature and make her dance to our tune. As delusions go, it’s pretty harmless – include an artificial rill into any garden plan (my favourite is at Rousham House in Oxfordshire) and my joy is complete. These tiny canals channel water from one location to another, the better for us to hear it trickle and watch it sparkle in the sun. Let us dabble our toes and chill our wine in clear, running water while we may – and leave all that other stuff beyond the garden fence.
