Salvia ‘Amistad’ has a kind of regal, takes-no-nonsense air about it – handsome mid-green foliage, tall slender black stems and flowers with petals of the richest royal-purple. It’s a stunner that works well in a mixed border but, to my mind at least, benefits from being given a little room to breathe. If you still need convincing, it’s a favourite with the bees too. Whether or not you consider it hardy (for which read, is it likely to cark it over winter?) is likely to depend on your soil – on heavy ground which retains the cold, a good thick mulch would be wise, but if it’s likely to get waterlogged you’d be better lifting this salvia and replanting in spring.
