Day 236: herbs

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Somewhere along the way I allowed myself to get distracted from herbs. There were among the first things I grew – rows and rows of chives and a whopping great angelica being the standout memory of my childhood garden. Plants we can make use of for their culinary or medicinal properties are naturally the gateway flora to the rest of the garden and, wandering deeper in, we get waylaid by blousy flowers (in shades other than white or mauve) and impressive displays of foliage. But this August bank-holiday weekend, as the mercury rises again and volatile oils become airborne, I’ll be spending some time with my herbs, propagating, pinching out, and making plans for next year.
