Day 238: Dahlia 'Cafe au Lait'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Until recently I would have said that Dahlia ‘Cafe au Lait’ was Instagram’s favourite flower, in terms of a named variety (as opposed to simply ‘roses’ or ‘paeonies’, which always go down well). This year, the immense and wonderfully intricate ‘Penhill Watermelon’ (Day 206) seems to be giving it a run for its money, though there will always be a place in my heart (and my garden) for an enormous daisy with petals like silk, and a colour somewhere between that of a ripe lychee and the inside of a really good meringue.
