Day 261: Geranium 'Dusky Crug'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Cats have catnip – but for me, there are purple-leaved plants. I have to restrain myself as they always look their best in a ratio of at the very least six to one in favour of their more verdantly foliaged fellows and, were I to be indulged, the whole garden would be one mass of maroon. Imagine, then, a hardy geranium (an all-time-favourite robust, reliable, attractive plant) with a pale pink flower and deep purple, almost chocolate coloured leaves. That’s Geranium ‘Dusky Crug’ – a perfect front-of-border ground cover choice that’s possibly, I have to admit, slightly more fussy about having a well-draining soil than many of its relatives. But well worth the (admitedly slight) effort.
