Day 278: spider silk for breakfast

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

It’s that time of year when each early-morning excursion down the garden will inevitably result in a face full of spider silk. I’ve learnt to march with arm stretched in front of me when entering the greenhouse, and when approaching the shed – two places guaranteed to have seen overnight web construction – but more adhoc creations from numerous freelance garden spiders are still likely to envelop the noggin. I feel guilty for spoiling their night’s hard work, but honestly, you’d think they’d learn. Perhaps you have to reach a certain status in garden spider society before you get to build your web in the branches of a tree, away from the destructive passage of humans.
