Day 295: dock day

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Every year contains within its span a handful of days when the weather is perfect for weeding. There may or may not be sun, but there should be an absence of rain (so as not to incommode the gardener), a light, fresh breeze and, above all, moist soil – the kind when you can tickle the earth around a broad leaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius), grasp it by the collar and haul the entire plant from the ground, long taproot intact. It is, quite possibly, the most satisfying experience known to humankind, and if you think I need to get out more, you should to try it.

NOTE. Courtesy of the 1959 Weeds Act in the UK and the subsequent doubling down of the 2014 legislation, broadleaved dock is one of the five “injurious weeds” whose failure to control could land you with an ASBO. Which just goes to show how right Mr Bumble was, in one respect, at least.
