Day 301: traffic signals

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

British summertime bit the dust over the weekend, giving us an extra hour in bed and all the confirmation we needed that the darkest days are coming. Meanwhile the garden seems finally to be shifting into its traffic-light phase, for so long stuck on green, now flickering amber with the odd hint of bright red – STOP!! – creeping in at the edges. Rose hips, of course, spindle leaves and dogwood stems, while the forecast run of cooler overnight temperatures gives me hope that in no time the oak-leaved hydrangea will be blushing to its roots. Though, as looks go, it’s less gentle blush than ‘flayed alive’ – but a crackingly good scarlet all the same.
