Day 317: structure

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

My own curving grass path and yew hedging looks rather less impressive than those in Waterperry Gardens, near Oxford, but I like to think they’re somehow related.

I have a small window now, before things get too soggy out there, to tighten up the structure in the garden. At least in terms of evergreen hedging and lawn edging – the grass has finally stopped growing, and having a crisp line either side of grassy paths through the winter is one of those little gardening pleasures. I’ve never gardened on a light soil, and bumbling about too close to the edge of the turf over cold, wet clay deforms the lawn edge, so now is probably my last chance till spring. It had better not turn mild again before then. The yew I will still give a final tickle to just to neaten things up – a bit late, and if I thought we would be getting heavy frosts over the next few weeks I might think twice, but it’s a tough old thing, and quite forgiving. The deciduous hedges I’ll leave for a chilly winter’s day when they’re well and truly slumbering. They won’t even know about it.
