I’d imagined my tulips would emerge with grace and synchronicity, a kind of slow-motion dance of reaching and unfurling, something beautiful to behold each day as winter steadily hands over to spring. And, truth be told, something not unlike that is beginning in the beds and borders, as well as in several containers – but not here, not in this tiny pot crammed with Tulip ‘Esperanto’ from which, as if in protest at the congested conditions to which they’ve been subjected, the ring leader seems to have burst out ahead of the main group, intent upon staging their lonely protest, and buggering up my display into the bargain. Which in one way is annoying but, in another, is a wonderful reminder of how every plant is an individual.
