Day 67: feed me, Seymour

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Unlike the plants in our flower beds who, unless entirely unsuited to local growing conditions, can get much if not all they need from the soil through which their roots roam free, those things we grow in containers – particularly those sitting in pots indoors – are entirely reliant upon us for their nutritional requirements. It’s something I regularly have to call to mind when I catch myself in the act of berating the weeping fig for failing to put on a more voluptuous and verdant show; that it’s been sitting in a pot filled with something resembling the earthly remains of a recently-staked vampire for over twenty five years with little help from me is testament to its amazing resilience. But as the light levels grow in early March, I find myself reaching for the plant food, full of good intentions. This month at least, the indoor jungle will get fed.
