Day 89: sun lovin' fun lovin' tulips

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

All tulips love the sun; it’s in their job description. It’s certainly in their genes, hailing as they do from Turkey. One day of warmth and sunshine and our oldest and most cheery variety, ‘Purissima’, is lolling around and letting it all hang out. For something that arrived in our garden entirely by mistake (they were supposed to be ‘White Triumphator’ – the bulb company’s error was our gain), they’ve become respected, if eccentric, elder denizens of these borders, as much part of spring here as the blossom on the amelanchier and the blue haze of forget-me-nots.
