Day 149: masterwort

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The astrantia is in flower – I’m fairly sure that this one is ‘Ruby Wedding’ – and I’m enjoying the slightly fussy complexity of its flowers. Normally I allow myself to get lost gazing down on the umbels from above, but today I thought I’d approach it in profile, which is a thing worth risking soggy knees for. From this angle, I’m reminded why I used to think of this as ‘the lampshade plant’ before I discovered its name (it also goes by ‘masterwort’ and ‘Hattie’s pincushion’). This close, I detect no scent, though many folk find its pong prohibitive in the border, and certainly the vase.
