Day 177: Phlomis russeliana

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Boo to the custard-haters, the disparagers of yellow in the garden, they who would ban the butters and the creams from the beds and restrict them to the kitchen and the breakfast table. I admit to being poacher-turned-gamekeeper here, since I was once of their number – at least as far as daffodils go – though I’m not sure I ever declared a hard-and-fast rule for our own garden. Had I done such a thing, I’d have denied myself the joy of Phlomis russeliana – this specimen hastily bunged into a spare patch of soil right at the end of the bed above which its tiered flowers are now elevated, against a backdrop of green hawthorn foliage and the pink blobs of a hardy geranium which might, or might not, be ‘Claridge Druce’.
