Day 178: Salvia 'Hot Lips'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I put my faith in Hot Lips this year. Salvia ‘Hot Lips’, I should specify, for the removal of any misunderstanding – shrubby, fairly hardy, generally reliable. But last winter seems to have hit it hard in all my gardens and, in spite of my confidence that it would bounce back, it’s taken its time and a good proportion of the established framework has been looking unusually bare. Until now – not before time, my stalwart old friend has rewarded my trust with foliage and flowers and, in those cases where I felt obliged to hedge my bets and cut it back hard, I’m sure we can just call that rejuvenative pruning.
