Day 247: elderberry memories

To me, nothing quite says ‘Back to School’ like elderberries. An annual ritual at the primary school I attended involved wearing down the soles of our new shoes by skidding as far as possible along the surface of a playground, slicked with the juice of purple-black berries that had been scrumped from and overhanging tree and then gleefully trampled into the tarmac. These days, I can think of better things to do with the juice – flavouring gin or jellies, or making syrup to fend off winter colds, for starters. But the sight of the branches laden with fruit always takes me back, and a distant muscle memory kicks in, readying for the run up...
