Day 281: Euonymus europeaus

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The fruits of the European spindle tree (Euonymus europeaus) always steal a march on the foliage, bright pink capsules already splitting to reveal the orange seeds, while the leaves are only just beginning to show signs of their autumn colour shift. In a few weeks they will fall into line, abandoning deep green for rich purples and reds, and everything will look rather more deliberate than it does just now, when you could be excused for thinking someone had come along and stuck the wrong kind of bauble on the wrong kind of tree.
