It’s hard to escape the conclusion that some plants are just closely guarded secrets – amsonia, or bluestar, is one of these. I’m not sure why it’s not planted more widely on this side of the pond, but it’s another fabulous North American perennial, with steel blue, star-shaped flowers in spring above mid-green foliage that turns fantastic shades of fiery gold and orange in autumn. This one is Amsonia illustris, not altogether dissimilar from A. tabernaemontana, both with thicker, more lance-shaped leaves than the needle-like foliage of A. hubrichtii. As if you need another reason to plant it, it’s deer and rabbit resistant, too.
