Day 309: Strawberry tree

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) is not best pleased, and it’s letting its displeasure be known. Usually it would have been covered in those silly little clown-nose fruit for a month by now, but this year, it’s only come into flower in the last week or so. We can’t really blame it – it was subject to an ignominious lopping at the hands of a tree surgeon early in the year, after which I needed to tidy up the raggedy wounds and, for a month or two, there was even talk of whether or not it would survive. We were right to keep the faith, but she’s still got a point to make.
