Day 310: November butterflies

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I don’t recall ever before having been fortunate enough to have the company of a butterfly in the garden in November, but apparently, if it’s going to happen, it will almost certainly be a Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta), though there’s a small chance of a Comma early in the month if it’s not too cold. The Red Admiral, along with the Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Comma and Brimstone are UK butterflies that will hibernate as adults overwinter, emerging to lay eggs in spring, most likely in a shed or a hollow tree, except in the case of the Brimstone, which favours nestling into ivy or some other dense evergreen cover.
