Day 311: a new bed

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Late planted chard, just getting going in here, the latest bed to be carved out of the grass. I have a soft spot for this bed, because while we’ve been chopping bits out of the lawn here for years now here, it wasn’t until punching through with this aperture – a small, elegantly recurved excision reflecting a much larger bed across the path – that the whole began to make sense. Which is quite another thing from saying the garden feels finished – it’s just that this section now has a little integrity. Which sounds like a lot of waffle – the main thing is, the chard is happy (ignore the bolted bits), and will be enjoying the first year amnesty from slugs and snails that I’ve often observed, and which – to my knowledge – has yet to be much written about.
