Day 338: holly berries

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I think it might be a good year for holly berries. Not the best, but better than the last, when the shapely dark green leaves had to carry the whole winter show on their own. There’s an old wives’ tale (never underestimate an old wife – or a new one, for that matter) of plentiful berries on the holly being a precursor of a harsh winter, but quite what controls the abundance of the crop is something upon which no-one seems quite to agree. Last year’s hot dry summer was followed by a disappointing show, this years mild and soggy autumn seems to have had a more positive effect on the fruit. But, pish and tush, it never does to confuse correlation with causation. In this, I recommend striving for no more than blissful ignorance, and enjoying these little splashes of red whenever we’re lucky enough to have them.
