Day 339: the medlar

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I’ve a bowl of medlars on the kitchen counter, the fruit of Mespilus germanica, commonly and delightfully referred to as the cat’s bum fruit, or ‘open arse’ if you were Chaucer or Shakespeare. Not quite ripe, and certainly not yet bletted – that state of rottenness desirable (if you can can call it that) for these little delicacies, when the insides take on a texture and sweetness that’s likened to custard or to apple sauce. There are plenty of recipes – naturally high in pectin, they’ll make a good jelly or ‘cheese’, though pureed with creme freche and honey and spices might be the way to go. Unyielding in their current state, I’ll have to see how the mood takes me when in a few weeks my bowlful of disgustingly soft and wrinkly things go pop.
