Day 340: fennel, still

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Last one standing, tall stems of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) keep me company in the soggy December veg garden, raindrops hanging from the seed heads and glinting in the failing light. We leave these for the birds, though I’m not sure if they like the taste of aniseed, and rather hope they don’t strip them clean since reaching up to snaffle one of the stripey little flavour bombs is among the gardener’s many perks. I’m aware I’ve mentioned this before, but not in winter, these lanky skeletons, so far from their Mediterranean home, the only upright form just now upon these beds other than the hedges of yew and box that bound this space, and I’ll not be nibbling on those.
