Day 322: fly agaric

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Mention the word ‘toadstool’ to anyone and they’re more than likely to conjur up a mental picture of the fruiting body of fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) – it’s so deeply baked into us that no self respecting book of fairytales would be complete without an illustration in which several appeared in supporting roles to the posteriors of weary grey folk. So it’s a welcome and cheery sight, poking out of the leaf litter beneath conifers or birch trees, even though the red colouration should be flashing a warning to us of its toxicity – though it probably won’t kill you with the efficiency of some of its deadly poisonous relatives (the death caps, the destroying angels), it won’t do you any good. Thankfully this one’s so recognisable even I couldn’t confuse it for an edible mushroom.
